On Digital Percussion and the Cardiac Sign in Carcinoma

چکیده
A Summary. The cardiac sign in carcinoma is a remarkable diminution of the area of cardiac dulness in the recumbent posture as determined by digital percussion. In that posture the dulness, in the normal adult, begins above about the third costal cartilage, reaches rightwards as nearly as possible to the mid-sternal line, and measures across about 3 to 3|inches at the level of the fifth costal cartilage. On the other hand, in the carcinoma patient who presents the sign the cardiac dulness in recumbency begins above about the fourth or fifth costal cartilage, has its rightward edge about half an inch or 1 inch to the left of the mid-sternal line, and measures across less than 2 inches at the level of the fifth costal cartilage. Often it measures less than

متن کاملIndirect Fist Percussion of the Liver Is a More Sensitive Technique for Detecting Hepatobiliary Infections than Murphy's Sign
Background. Murphy's sign and Charcot's triad are established clinical findings of acute cholecystitis and cholangitis, respectively, but both show low sensitivity and limited clinical application. We evaluated if indirect fist percussion of the liver improves the efficiency of diagnosing cholecystitis and cholangitis when used as a diagnostic adjunct. Methods. The presence/absence of right upp...
متن کاملA simple bedside manoeuvre to detect ascites.
BACKGROUND Shifting dullness and fluid wave are two techniques commonly used to detect ascites. However, these may fail to detect moderate or minimal ascites. Ultrasonography is a good non-invasive method to detect ascites but may not be available in distant rural areas of India. We assessed the utility of the puddle sign and auscultatory percussion for detecting ascites. METHODS Sixty-six pa...
